From 2016 to 2025, Thomas A. Cross's consulting work was done with VIP LLC and Before The Audit LLC, the turnaround and compliance consulting practices he has worked through since 2016. His specialty is a personalized, plain-English review of an organization's own books — its budgets, compiled and read the way an owner reads them: where every dollar goes, what has drifted, and what to fix first.
The work began with towns. A town hands over its budget books, and what comes back is a line-by-line review in plain English — written so a supervisor, a board member, or a resident can follow every figure: what each line is for, how it moved from year to year, and where the paperwork behind a number is not shown in the book. The finding, when something is unsupported, is stated fairly — the record needs to be added — plainly, and in time to fix it.
The same method now serves small medical practices. The practice provides its financials and billing reports, and the review returns the same plain-English picture: where every dollar goes, what has drifted from year to year, and a fix-it list in the order it should be tackled. It comes from someone who has sat in the operator's chair — twenty years as founder and chief executive of a four-site primary care practice with more than a hundred staff — and it is not a service that competes with the practice's own accountants. It reads the books the way the person responsible for them has to read them.
